Outdoor Gym Sessions with Andy Perkins for the U3A

This autumn we teamed up with local personal trainer Andy Perkins to deliver a free four-week gym programme to members of the University of the Third Age (U3A).

The sessions took place at the outdoor gym at Saumarez Park, which was funded by Bowel Cancer Guernsey. It was hoped that these sessions would increase the member’s confidence in using the equipment.

At each session Andy talked through the various types of equipment, explaining how the exercises could be tailored to accommodate different injuries or niggles.

Speaking of the session, Andy Perkins comments: ‘The outdoor sessions with the U3A were a great success and well attended. All of the participants were keen to take part and learn how to make the most of the equipment.’

Members of the U3A have gained much enjoyment from using the equipment and have even decided to continue meeting up as a group on a weekly basis, starting in the spring.

Pat Child, a member of the U3A, says: ‘I think the exercise sessions were a huge success. Andy was a really encouraging tutor who the group felt very comfortable working with. We would like to thank Andy and Bowel Cancer Guernsey for their support in kick-starting this initiative.’

‘Research has suggested that those who lead inactive or sedentary lifestyles are at an increased risk of bowel cancer, so it is important to incorporate regular exercise into your routine. Sessions like these are essential in raising awareness of the facilities available to islanders.’ says Anne Brouard, from Bowel Cancer Guernsey.

Andy Perkins, concludes: ‘It was very satisfying to see the improvement in the participants’ fitness levels following the structured fitness sessions.’

The outdoor gym is free to use 365 days a year and instructions are provided at each piece of equipment.

Outdoor gym session with Get Fit Guernsey

On Wednesday 5th October we teamed up with Maddy Diligent from Guernsey Fit Guernsey to offer a free outdoor gym session at Saumarez Park.

The morning session involved Maddy talking a group through each piece of equipment including tips on how to warm up and cool down.

Maddy also explained what to use to target certain areas of the body and she also gave different ways to approach the equipment depending on fitness level.

‘The equipment is really impressive! There’s a wide variety and something for everyone. The session was useful as it gave people the opportunity to give something new a try and ask questions if they were unsure of anything,’ explains Maddy.

Everyone was given a free Bowel Cancer Guernsey water bottle and information about becoming a Friend of Bowel Cancer Guernsey.

‘Research has suggested that inactive people have an increased risk of developing bowel cancer so regular exercise is really important. The session proved valuable as it has raised awareness of the facilities available to islanders,’ says Anne Brouard from Bowel Cancer Guernsey.

The outdoor gym is free to use and instructions are provided with each piece of equipment.

Bowel Cancer Guernsey opened the gym earlier this year to help people of all ages and abilities get active as part of the work that it does to prevent the disease.

Feel free to head down, get your heart rate up and enjoy the health benefits!
